My Luiseno Neighbors-A Peek Into The Past

it's the path not the distanceAs a professional woman in a two career family I sometimes felt as though Anne was speaking to directly to me across the generational divide. What she shares is a balance that you rarely see in books about successful lives. She speaks of the homes she lived in as well as her career. She talks about making hard choices and balancing the goals of two talented people very much in love. The gender war is not usually a war on the home front, it is rather a complicated dance to the staccato music of the world.
It is not necessary to appreciate her contributions to information law to embrace this book, but having that knowledge in the background allowed me to appreciate that while some over-use the phrase 'third way" some people truly have found such a path.

Myths of Northern Lands
Published in Paperback by Biblo-Moser (February, 1995)
Average review score:

Excellent pre-tolkein work for the post-tolkein generationI am very glad this book is still in print. It is imaginative and well researched. The fact that it is over 100 years old strengthens it, and allows the fan of Mythology to read a book uninfluenced by years of Tolkein-wannabe writing.
I am also glad we live in a time where the author (a woman) does not have to hide her gender by using her first initials on the cover. (As in my 1895 copy).

Nahanni trailhead : a year in the northern wilderness
Published in Unknown Binding by Deneau & Greenberg ()
Average review score:

A classicI love this book and reread it every couple of years. It has always been my dream to live in the wilderness for a year, as this honeymooning couple did.
It is well and simply written, with a few maps but only disappointingly blurry pictures. There's lots of great description, including the occasional tedium of holing up for the winter, the joys they had exploring the area once spring arrived, and the terror of dealing with wolves (or was it bears?) trying to break into their cabin.
They are candid about what they did wrong and how they dealt with spending so much uninterrupted time together.

The National Parks of Northern Mexico : A Complete Guidebook to Mexico'sCopper Canyon, Sea of Cortez, Baja, Sierra Del Carmens, etc.
Published in Paperback by Sunracer Publications (01 June, 1994)
Average review score:

A guide to wondrous adventuresIn the mid 1980s I bought the first edition of this book. It was a much smaller yet still beautiful edition. When the new edition came out in '94 I was quick to pick that one up. This new version is much expanded and elaborated. So what is this book? It is a combination of a travel guide, an ethno-historical book and a book on local botany, Indians and geology sprinkled heavily with gorgeous photographs. Richard Fisher has put decades of his life into making this flawless account of the area. Whether you are visiting the national parks of Mexico by road, off-road or railroad, you will need this book. I have used this book many times to research an area before going there. The book will take you to lost mission churches, huge waterfalls, off-world looking landscapes and everywhere in between.

Interesting and timelessAleksandr Pika is a great northern anthropologist, and I am greatful that his work has been translated into English. This book is an excellent study of USSR policy as it has affected (and continues to affect) Native Siberians.

The Network To Home Repair & Decoration Services - Northern New Jersey Edition
Published in Paperback by Lairhouse Pubns (15 January, 1999)
Average review score:

Fabulous resource for home services for anyone in New JerseyThis book is long overdue. Anyone who owns or rents a home/apartment will benefit from this book. All businesses in the book are recommended by satisfied customers - which makes it different from the Yellow pages. Each business has an informational write-up which is helpful for the consumer. In addition, each consumer was asked to quote on what that business did for them. The quotes are a good read. We have used several businesses from the book and were very pleased. This eliminates the hit and miss technique we were using before.

A New Ireland: Politics, Peace, and Reconciliation
Published in Hardcover by National Book Network (March, 1996)
Average review score:

A framework for true reconciliation in Northern IrelandJohn Hume is a virtually unknown figure in the United States, but he has been steadily gaining recognition due to his work in the Northern Irish peace agreement. This recognition is overdue and much deserved. This monumental book outlines Hume's political philosophy - a philosophy which seeks to brush aside the vengefulness and intransigence of Northern Ireland's past, searching instead for reconciliation through justice for all. Hume is heavily influenced by Matin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, and quotes from these two figures flavor Hume's text. Hume's themes may seem repetitive, and his ideas seem to be based on the shakey foundation of human progress, but this work demonstrates that he is a champion for for a true peace in Northern Ireland - a peace that is just for all.
I'm hoping to get my own copy soon to use in the Title IX(Indian Early Childhood Education)class that I work in at Pauma Elem.School. Don't forget our local history may not include anything about the American Revolution, but a people lived here who flourished in peace, and contributed to protecting a beautiful land and its resources, while trying to maintain family relationships as their homeland was changed by more powerful newcomers. With the loss of the elder language speakers, there are no children speaking the Luiseno tongue. Dr. Eric Elliot,PhD.of Palomar Comm.College is now teaching this language at our school site, in the hope that the children may give a vital piece of their culture to their children so the ties that bind may proudly continue.
